competence は「十分にできる能力」
competence は、才能の高さよりも「必要なことをきちんとできる能力」を表します。excellent skill のような非常に高い技能とは限りません。

competence は全体的な能力や適格性を表すことが多く、competency は仕事で求められる個別の能力項目を指すことが多いです。例: leadership competency（リーダーシップ能力項目）。ただし文脈によって重なる場合もあります。

通常は不可算名詞
competence は一般的に不可算名詞として使い、a competence や competences は普通あまり使いません。具体的な能力項目を複数表す場合は competencies がよく使われます。
