使い方

• opinion と fact の違い

  opinion は「人の考え・判断」で、fact は「確認できる事実」です。The cafe is near the station. は fact、The cafe is the best in town. は opinion です。

• in my opinion の使い方

  自分の意見を丁寧に言うときに In my opinion, ... を使います。ただし、In my opinion, I think ... は意味が重なりやすいので、In my opinion, ... または I think ... のどちらかで十分です。

• opinion on/about/of

  an opinion on/about a topic は「テーマについての意見」。have a good opinion of someone は「人をよく思っている、高く評価している」という意味です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: In my opinion, I think this idea is useful.

  正: In my opinion, this idea is useful.

  In my opinion と I think はどちらも「私は〜と思う」という意味を表すため、同時に使うと重複して聞こえます。

• 誤: According to my opinion, we should wait.

  正: In my opinion, we should wait.

  according to は普通、他人や資料など外部の情報源に使います。自分の意見には In my opinion が自然です。

• 誤: Please tell me your opinion for this problem.

  正: Please tell me your opinion on this problem.

  「問題・テーマについての意見」は opinion on または opinion about が自然です。
