  名詞

  何かが起こる可能性の高さを表す。多くの場合、the odds の形で使う。

使い方

• 基本は複数形で使う

  odds は形が複数形で、意味も『可能性』『賭け率』として普通は odds のまま使う。単数形 odd は主に形容詞で『奇妙な』『奇数の』という意味になる。

• chance との違い

  chance は日常的に『可能性』を広く表す。odds は可能性を数字や比較で考える感じが強く、the odds of winning や the odds are that ... のように使う。

• against the odds と against all odds

  against the odds は『不利な状況にもかかわらず』、against all odds はさらに強く『あらゆる困難にもかかわらず』という意味。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The odd of winning is low.

  正: The odds of winning are low.

  『可能性』の意味では odds を使い、動詞も複数扱いで are にするのが自然。

• 誤: The odds to win are high.

  正: The odds of winning are high.

  名詞や動名詞を続けるときは the odds of winning の形が自然。

• 誤: She is odds with her boss.

  正: She is at odds with her boss.

  『対立している』は be at odds with ... という決まった表現で、at が必要。
