使い方

• north of と in the north of の違い

  north of Japan は「日本の北に」、つまり日本の外側で北にある場合に使うことが多いです。in the north of Japan は「日本の北部に」という意味で、日本の中の北側を表します。

• 方角はふつう小文字

  単なる方角として使うときは north と小文字で書きます。地域名や歴史的・文化的なまとまりとして使うときは the North のように大文字になることがあります。

• go north は to を入れない

  north が副詞として「北へ」を表すときは、go north、drive north、move north のように to を入れずに使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Hokkaido is in north of Japan.

  正: Hokkaido is in the north of Japan.

  国や地域の中の北部を表すときは、ふつう in the north of ... と言います。

• 誤: We went to north by car.

  正: We went north by car.

  north が「北へ」という副詞の場合、to は不要です。

• 誤: The hotel is north side of the station.

  正: The hotel is on the north side of the station.

  「〜の北側に」は on the north side of ... が自然です。
