  northwards と northward はどちらも副詞で「北へ」という意味です。northwards はイギリス英語で特によく使われ、northward はアメリカ英語でもよく使われます。意味の違いはほとんどありません。

• 方向を表す副詞

  northwards は副詞なので、go, move, travel, head, fly など移動を表す動詞と一緒によく使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We went to northwards.

  正: We went northwards.

  northwards 自体に「北へ」という意味があるため、通常は前置詞 to を付けません。

• 誤: The northwards wind was cold.

  正: The north wind was cold.

  northwards は副詞なので、名詞 wind を直接説明する形容詞としては普通使いません。「北風」は north wind と言います。
