• southward と southwards

  southwards は「南へ」という副詞で、イギリス英語で特によく使われます。southward も同じ意味で使えますが、アメリカ英語では southward の方がやや一般的です。

• to を重ねない

  southwards 自体に「〜の方向へ」という意味があるので、普通は go to southwards とは言いません。go southwards のように使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We went to southwards.

  正: We went southwards.

  southwards は副詞で「南へ」という意味を含むため、前置詞 to は不要です。

• 誤: The town is southwards of London.

  正: The town is south of London.

  場所の位置関係を表すときは south of を使うのが自然です。southwards は主に移動の方向を表します。
