• その間に、一方で

  副詞

  2つの出来事が同じ時間に起こっていることを表す。別の場所や別の人の行動をつなぐときによく使う。

  I cooked dinner; meanwhile, my brother set the table.

  私が夕食を作っている間に、弟は食卓の準備をした。

• それまでの間に

  副詞

  あることが起こるまでの時間に、別のことをするという意味。in the meantime に近い。

  The doctor will see you soon. Meanwhile, please wait here.

  医師がまもなく診ます。それまでの間、ここでお待ちください。

• 一方では、ところが

  副詞

  前に述べた内容と対照的な状況を示すときに使う。ニュースや説明文でよく使われる。

  The company reported record profits. Meanwhile, many workers asked for higher pay.

  その会社は過去最高の利益を報告した。一方で、多くの従業員は賃上げを求めた。

使い方

• 文頭ではカンマを置くことが多い

  Meanwhile が文頭に来るときは、通常 Meanwhile, のようにカンマを置く。例: Meanwhile, I waited outside.

• meanwhile と while の違い

  while は接続詞として「〜している間に」と節をつなぐ。meanwhile は副詞なので、文全体をつなぐ。例: While I cooked, he cleaned. / I cooked. Meanwhile, he cleaned.

• meanwhile と in the meantime

  「それまでの間に」という意味では in the meantime とほぼ同じ。meanwhile は「一方で」という対比にもよく使える。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Meanwhile I was cooking, he cleaned the room.

  正: While I was cooking, he cleaned the room.

  meanwhile は接続詞ではないので、直後に主語＋動詞の節をそのまま続けて「〜している間に」とは言いにくい。この場合は while を使う。

• 誤: The bus will arrive soon. While, please wait here.

  正: The bus will arrive soon. Meanwhile, please wait here.

  文頭で「それまでの間」という副詞として使う場合は while ではなく meanwhile が自然。
