meantime

その間、合間 ある出来事が起こるまでの待っている時間や、2つの出来事の間の時間を表します。特に in the meantime「その間に」という形でよく使います。
その間に、それまでは meanwhile とほぼ同じ意味で、別のことが進んでいる間に何かが起こることを表します。文頭で Meantime, ... と使うことがありますが、会話や物語調でややくだけた響きがあります。

使い方

  • in the meantime が最も自然

    meantime は単独の名詞よりも、in the meantime「その間に」「それまでの間」の形で非常によく使われます。日常会話、仕事、メールでも自然です。

  • meanwhile との違い

    in the meantime と meanwhile はどちらも「その間に」という意味です。meanwhile は文頭・文中でそのまま副詞として使いやすく、in the meantime は「待っている間に何かをする」という感じが出やすいです。

  • meantime 単独の副詞用法

    Meantime, ... という文頭の使い方は可能ですが、meanwhile より少しくだけた、または物語的な響きがあります。英語学習者はまず in the meantime を覚えると安全です。

よくある間違い

    正: In the meantime, please wait here.

    meantime は during よりも in the meantime の形で使うのが自然です。

  • 誤: Please finish this until meantime.

    正: Please finish this in the meantime.

    「その間に」は until meantime とは言いません。until は期限を表す語と使い、meantime には通常 in the meantime を使います。
