使い方

• look at よりも詳しく調べる感じ

  examine は、ただ見るだけでなく、理由や問題点を見つけるために注意深く調べる意味があります。日常会話では look at、より正式・専門的な場面では examine がよく使われます。

• 目的語を直接続ける

  「〜について調べる」と言いたいとき、日本語につられて examine about としないで、examine the problem のように目的語を直接置きます。

• 医療では「診察する」

  doctor, nurse, patient などと一緒に使うと、体を調べる「診察する」という意味になります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The team examined about the problem.

  正: The team examined the problem.

  examine は他動詞なので、about を入れずに目的語を直接続けます。

• 誤: The doctor examined to my arm.

  正: The doctor examined my arm.

  体の部位を診察する場合も、examine の後に目的語を直接置きます。

• 誤: We examined whether should we change the plan.

  正: We examined whether we should change the plan.

  whether の後は疑問文の語順ではなく、we should change のような普通の語順にします。
