east of と in the east of の違い
east of Japan は「日本の東に」、つまり日本の外側の東方向を表すことが多いです。in the east of Japan は「日本の東部に」という意味で、日本の中の東側を表します。

方角は冠詞なしでも使う
移動方向を表す副詞では go east や travel east のように冠詞を付けません。一方、地域の一部を言うときは in the east のように the を付けることが多いです。
