使い方

• 原因と結果をつなぐ語

  consequently は「前の内容が原因で、後の内容が結果になる」関係をはっきり示す。日本語の「その結果」「したがって」に近い。

• so より硬い表現

  日常会話では so がよく使われるが、consequently はよりフォーマルで、書き言葉・発表・ビジネス文書・学術的な説明に向いている。

• 文中でのコンマ

  文頭や文の途中で使うとき、consequently の後にコンマを置くことが多い。例: Consequently, the plan was changed.

よくある間違い

• 誤: He was sick, but consequently he stayed home.

  正: He was sick, so he stayed home. / He was sick; consequently, he stayed home.

  consequently は結果を表す語なので、逆接の but と一緒に使うと意味がぶつかることが多い。
