• 保証する、断言する

  動詞

  相手が疑わないように、「本当です」「必ずそうなります」と自信を持って伝えること。多くの場合、assure someone that ... の形で使います。

使い方

• assure は人を目的語にしやすい

  「人に保証する」は assure someone that ... が自然です。例: I assure you that it is true.「それは本当だと保証します。」

• assure と ensure の違い

  assure は主に「人に言って安心させる・保証する」。ensure は「何かが確実に起こるようにする」。例: I assured him it was safe. / This rule ensures safety.

• assure と insure の違い

  insure は主に「保険をかける」という意味です。assure は「保証する・安心させる」です。ただしイギリス英語では life assurance のように生命保険関連で assurance が使われることがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I assured to him that it was safe.

  正: I assured him that it was safe.

  assure は普通、目的語の人を直接置きます。assure to him とは言いません。

• 誤: Please assure the door is locked.

  正: Please make sure the door is locked.

  日常会話で「確かめてください」は make sure が自然です。assure oneself that ... なら「自分で確かめる」という意味で使えます。

• 誤: This policy will assure that all workers are paid on time.

  正: This policy will ensure that all workers are paid on time.

  「制度や方法が確実にそうさせる」という意味では ensure がより自然です。assure は人に保証する時によく使います。
