• help より丁寧な響き

  assistance は help より少しフォーマルで、仕事、サービス、案内、公式な支援の場面でよく使われます。日常会話では help のほうが自然なことも多いです。

• 基本的に不可算名詞

  assistance は通常、数えられない名詞として使います。a assistance とは言わず、some assistance や any assistance のように使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I need an assistance.

  正: I need assistance.

  assistance は通常不可算名詞なので、冠詞 an は付けません。

• 誤: Thank you for your assistances.

  正: Thank you for your assistance.

  一般的な『手助け』の意味では assistance を複数形にしません。

• 誤: He gave me an assistance to fix the computer.

  正: He gave me assistance in fixing the computer.

  give someone assistance は可能ですが、an は不要です。また『〜する際の援助』は assistance in doing が自然です。
