使い方

• wheel と tire の違い

  wheel は車輪全体、または金属のホイール部分を指します。tire は車輪の外側についているゴムの部分です。日本語の「タイヤ」は英語では tire です。

• 車のハンドルは steering wheel

  車の運転用の「ハンドル」は英語で handle ではなく steering wheel と言います。文脈が運転なら the wheel だけでも通じます。

• behind the wheel

  behind the wheel は「運転している、ハンドルを握っている」という意味の決まった表現です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: My car's wheel is flat.

  正: My car's tire is flat.

  空気が抜けるのはふつうゴムの tire です。wheel は車輪全体やホイール部分を指します。

• 誤: Hold the handle when you drive.

  正: Hold the steering wheel when you drive.

  車の「ハンドル」は英語で handle ではなく steering wheel と言います。

• 誤: He drove the wheel carefully.

  正: He drove the car carefully.
