使い方

• 名詞では of とよく使う

  「〜についての理解」は an understanding of ... が自然です。例: an understanding of grammar「文法の理解」。

• 感謝表現でよく使う

  Thank you for your understanding. は、迷惑や変更がある場面で「ご理解ありがとうございます」という丁寧な表現です。

• 形容詞は人に使いやすい

  an understanding person, an understanding teacher のように、人が相手の事情を分かってくれることを表します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I have understanding about English grammar.

  正: I have an understanding of English grammar.

  名詞として使う場合は、単数なら a/an が必要なことが多く、「〜についての理解」は of を使うのが自然です。

• 誤: Thank you for understanding me in this delay.

  正: Thank you for your understanding about this delay.

  遅れなどの状況への理解に感謝する場合は、your understanding を使うと丁寧で自然です。

• 誤: He is an understanding of math.

  正: He has a good understanding of math.

  understanding は「理解」という名詞なので、人について「数学を理解している」と言うときは have a good understanding of ... を使います。
