〜の下に、〜の下側に 物や場所の真下、または下の面にあることを表します。under より少し「下に隠れている」「下側に接している」感じが出ることがあります。
下に、下側に 前に出た物や場所の下の位置を指します。名詞を続けずに使います。

under との違い
underneath は under と同じように「〜の下に」を表しますが、物の下に隠れている感じや、下側・裏側にある感じを少し強く出せます。日常会話では under のほうが短く一般的です。

前置詞と副詞の使い分け
underneath the table のように後ろに名詞が続くと前置詞です。Put the box underneath. のように名詞が続かない場合は副詞です。

比喩的な使い方
Underneath his smile のように、外から見える様子の奥にある本当の感情や性質を表すことがあります。日本語では「〜の裏に」「〜の奥に」と訳すと自然です。
