使い方

• toward と towards

  toward と towards はほぼ同じ意味です。アメリカ英語では toward がより一般的で、イギリス英語では towards もよく使われます。正式な文章では、どちらか一方に表記を統一すると自然です。

• 方向だけでなく態度にも使う

  toward は物理的な方向だけでなく、attitude toward people（人々に対する態度）のように、感情や考えの向きにも使えます。

• to との違い

  to は到着点を強く示すことが多く、toward は『その方向へ』という動きや向きを表します。I walked to the station. は駅に着いた感じが強く、I walked toward the station. は駅の方向へ歩いたという意味です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She walked to toward the door.

  正: She walked toward the door.

  toward は前置詞なので、直前に to を重ねて使いません。

• 誤: He has a good attitude for his coworkers.

  正: He has a good attitude toward his coworkers.

  『〜に対する態度』は attitude toward ... が自然です。

• 誤: The money was used toward to buy new computers.

  正: The money was used toward buying new computers.

  toward の後ろに動詞を置く場合は、buying のような -ing 形が自然です。
