使い方

• towards と toward

  towards と toward はほぼ同じ意味です。イギリス英語では towards がよく使われ、アメリカ英語では toward がより一般的です。どちらも前置詞なので、後ろには名詞・代名詞・動名詞などが続きます。

• 方向だけでなく態度にも使う

  towards は物理的な方向だけでなく、attitude towards people のように『人や物に対する態度・感情』にも使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She walked towards to the station.

  正: She walked towards the station.

  towards 自体に『〜へ』の意味があるので、後ろに to を重ねません。

• 誤: His attitude for customers is polite.

  正: His attitude towards customers is polite.

  『〜に対する態度』は attitude towards ... が自然です。for だけではこの意味を表しにくいです。
