意味

• 〜よりも

  接続詞

  形容詞や副詞の比較級のあとで、2つのもの・人・行動を比べるときに使います。

  She is taller than her brother.

  彼女は弟より背が高いです。

• 〜よりも

  前置詞

  比較の相手として、名詞・代名詞などの前に置かれます。会話では than me, than him のような形がよく使われます。

  This train is faster than the bus.

  この電車はバスより速いです。

• 〜するよりも、むしろ〜

  接続詞

  rather than の形で、2つの選択肢を比べて「片方ではなく、もう片方を選ぶ」という意味を表します。

  I would rather stay home than go out in the rain.

  雨の中出かけるより、家にいたいです。

• 〜以外に

  前置詞

  other than の形で、「〜を除いて」「〜以外に」という意味を表します。

  No one other than the manager knew the plan.

  マネージャー以外は誰もその計画を知りませんでした。

使い方

• 比較級のあとで使う

  than は taller than, faster than, more expensive than のように、比較級のあとで使うのが基本です。「AはBより〜だ」という意味になります。

• than と then の違い

  than は比較の「〜よりも」です。then は時間の流れを表す「その時」「それから」です。発音が似ているため、つづりを間違えやすいです。

• than me と than I am

  会話では She is taller than me. が自然でよく使われます。より正式には She is taller than I am. と言えます。than I だけは古風・硬めに聞こえることがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She is taller then me.

  正: She is taller than me.

  比較の「〜よりも」は then ではなく than を使います。then は「それから」「その時」という意味です。

• 誤: I prefer tea than coffee.

  正: I prefer tea to coffee.

  prefer はふつう than ではなく to と一緒に使います。than を使うなら I like tea more than coffee. と言えます。

• 誤: This phone is more better than mine.

  正: This phone is better than mine.

  better は good の比較級なので、前に more を付けません。
