• 種、生物の種類

  名詞

  動物・植物・細菌などを分類するときの基本的なグループ。互いに子孫を残せる同じ種類の生物を指すことが多いです。単数形も複数形も species です。

  The giant panda is an endangered species.

  ジャイアントパンダは絶滅危惧種です。

  名詞

  生物以外にも、やや硬い表現で「ある種類のもの」という意味で使われます。日常会話では type や kind の方が普通です。

使い方

• 単数形も複数形も species

  species は単数でも複数でも形が変わりません。a species は「1つの種」、many species は「多くの種」です。specieses とは普通言いません。

• 発音は最後の -s まで読む

  species は「スピーシーズ」のように発音します。複数だから最後にさらに s を足す必要はありません。

• kind / type より専門的

  生物分類では species が正確な語です。一般的な「種類」は kind や type が自然なことが多く、species は硬い・専門的に聞こえる場合があります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: There are many specieses in the forest.

  正: There are many species in the forest.

  species の複数形も species です。specieses は標準的ではありません。

• 誤: A specie of bird lives on the island.

  正: A species of bird lives on the island.

  species の単数形は species です。specie は別語で、主に「正貨・硬貨」を意味する専門語です。

• 誤: This animal is a kind of species.

  正: This animal belongs to a species.

  生物分類について言うときは belong to a species「ある種に属する」や be a species of ...「〜の一種である」が自然です。
