• 基本は the sky が多い

• in the sky を使う

  太陽、月、鳥、飛行機などが空にある・見えると言うときは、ふつう in the sky を使います。on the sky とは言いません。

• skies は詩的・天気表現でよく使う

  複数形 skies は「空模様」や「ある地域の空」を表すときに使われます。例: blue skies, clear skies, cloudy skies.

よくある間違い

• 誤: There are many stars on the sky.

  正: There are many stars in the sky.

  空の中に見えるという感覚なので、前置詞は on ではなく in を使います。

• 誤: Sky is blue today.

  正: The sky is blue today.

  一般的に目の前の空全体を指すときは the sky と言うのが自然です。

• 誤: I saw a beautiful sky in the morning.

  正: I saw a beautiful morning sky.

  「朝の空」は morning sky と言うと自然です。beautiful sky も可能ですが、時間を表す語は名詞の前に置くと英語らしくなります。
