使い方

• 目的語あり・なしの両方で使える

  shortenは「shorten the story（話を短くする）」のように目的語を取る他動詞としても、「The days shorten（日が短くなる）」のように自動詞としても使えます。

• shorten A to B

  「AをBに短くする・略す」はshorten A to Bを使います。例: shorten Robert to Rob（RobertをRobに略す）。

• cutとの違い

  cutは「切る・減らす」という広い意味で使えます。shortenは特に「長さ・時間・文章などを短くする」ことに焦点があります。

よくある間違い

  shorten自体に「短くする」という意味があるため、通常downは不要です。
