香り、におい 花、香水、食べ物などから出るにおい。特に、よい香りや特徴のあるにおいについてよく使います。
においの跡、手がかりとなるにおい 動物や人が残したにおいで、犬などが追跡するときの手がかりになるものです。

使い方

  • smell との違い

    smell は「におい」を表す最も一般的な語で、よいにおいにも悪いにおいにも使えます。scent はやや上品で、花・香水・自然の香りなど、特徴的または心地よいにおいに使うことが多いです。

  • c は発音しない

    scent の発音は sent と同じ /sent/ です。つづりには c がありますが、読まないので注意しましょう。

  • 比喩表現

    scent は「危険・チャンス・問題などを感じ取る」という比喩的な意味でも使えます。例: scent danger「危険を察知する」、scent an opportunity「機会を感じ取る」。
