  本当にそうかは疑わしいが、ある内容や性質を持つと主張することを表します。よく purport to be/do の形で使います。

• 疑いを含みやすい

  purport to は「〜だと主張しているが、本当かは分からない」という距離を置いた響きがあります。報道や法律文でよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The restaurant purports delicious food.

  正: The restaurant claims to serve delicious food.

  動詞 purport は purport to do や purport to be の形が基本です。日常的な主張には claim が自然です。
