• pond と lake の違い

  pond は lake より小さい池を指します。lake は「湖」で、ボートが出るほど大きいことも多いです。ただし大きさの境界は厳密ではありません。

• in the pond と by the pond

  水の中にいる場合は in the pond、池のそばにいる場合は by the pond を使います。例: fish in the pond（池の中の魚）、a bench by the pond（池のそばのベンチ）。

よくある間違い

• 誤: There are fish on the pond.

  正: There are fish in the pond.

  魚は水の中にいるので、基本的には on ではなく in を使います。on the pond は『池の表面に』という意味になり、ボートや氷などに使うことがあります。

• 誤: We walked to the lake in my small garden.

  正: We walked to the pond in my small garden.

  小さな庭にある水場なら、lake より pond のほうが自然です。lake は通常もっと大きな『湖』を指します。
