  名詞

  100を基準にした割合を表す単位。記号は %。たとえば 25 percent は「100のうち25」、つまり「25%」という意味です。

使い方

• 数字の後に置く

  percent はふつう数字の後に置きます。例: 10 percent, 50 percent。日本語の「パーセント」と同じ順番で考えられます。

• percent と percentage の違い

  percent は具体的な数字と一緒に使うことが多く、percentage は「割合」という考え自体を指すことが多いです。例: 20 percent of people / a high percentage of people。

• イギリス英語では per cent もよく使う

  アメリカ英語では percent が一般的です。イギリス英語では percent も使われますが、特に正式な文章では per cent と分けて書くことがあります。発音はほぼ同じです。

• % の読み方

  記号 % は英語で percent と読みます。50% は fifty percent と読みます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The price went up 5 percents.

  正: The price went up 5 percent.

  数字の後の percent は複数形にしません。5 percent のように単数形のまま使います。

• 誤: A high percent of the answers were correct.

  正: A high percentage of the answers were correct.

  「高い割合」と一般的に言いたいときは percentage のほうが自然です。ただし、会話やアメリカ英語では percent が名詞的に使われることもあります。

• 誤: The discount is 20 percentage.

  正: The discount is 20 percent.

  具体的な数字の後には percentage ではなく percent を使います。
