  形容詞

  数が多いことを表す形容詞です。many より少し硬く、文章やニュース、説明でよく使われます。ふつう数えられる複数名詞の前に置きます。

使い方

• many より少し硬い

  numerous は many とほぼ同じ意味ですが、日常会話では many のほうが自然なことが多いです。numerous は文章、報告書、ニュース、発表などでよく使われます。

• 複数の数えられる名詞に使う

  numerous は numerous books, numerous problems のように、数えられる名詞の複数形とよく使います。water や information などの不可算名詞には通常使いません。

よくある間違い

• 誤: There is numerous information online.

  正: There is a lot of information online.

  information は不可算名詞なので numerous information とは言いません。a lot of information や much information を使います。

• 誤: I have numerous friend.

  正: I have numerous friends.

  numerous の後ろは、ふつう数えられる名詞の複数形にします。friend ではなく friends が自然です。
