いくつかの、数人の 2つ・2人より多いが、とても多いわけではない数を表す。数えられる名詞の複数形の前に置く。
いくつか、数人 前に出た名詞や、文脈で分かるものを受けて「そのうちのいくつか・数人」という意味で使う。
それぞれの、別々の 古い表現や法律・格式ばった文で、「別々の」「それぞれの」という意味で使われることがある。日常会話ではあまり使わない。

使い方

  • several は「少なくとも3つくらい」の感じ

    several は普通、2つより多く、many ほど多くない数を表します。正確な数は言わず、「いくつか」「数個・数人」という感覚です。

  • 数えられる複数名詞に使う

    several books、several people、several days のように、数えられる名詞の複数形と使います。water や information のような不可算名詞にはそのまま使いません。

  • several of の後ろ

    several of the students、several of my friends のように、特定のグループの中の「数人・いくつか」を言うときに使います。of の後ろの名詞はふつう複数形です。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: I found several information online.

    正: I found several pieces of information online.

    information は不可算名詞なので、several information とは言いません。数えるときは pieces of information を使います。

  • 誤: Several of my friend came to the party.

    正: Several of my friends came to the party.

    several of の後ろで「友達のうち数人」と言う場合、friends のように複数形にします。

  • 誤: I bought several book yesterday.

    正: I bought several books yesterday.

    several の後ろの数えられる名詞は複数形にします。
