副詞

necessarily

必然的に、避けられずに ある条件や状況から、当然そうなる・そうせざるを得ないという意味。少し硬めの表現です。
必ずしも 否定文で not necessarily の形でよく使い、「いつもそうとは限らない」「必ず〜というわけではない」という意味になります。
当然の結果として 論理的に考えると、その結論になるという意味で使われます。necessarily follow の形がよくあります。

使い方

  • not necessarily が最重要

    necessarily は単独では「必然的に」という硬めの意味ですが、日常会話では not necessarily「必ずしも〜ない」の形で非常によく使われます。

  • always とは意味が違う

    always は「いつも」、necessarily は「当然そうなる・必然的にそうなる」という意味です。not necessarily は「いつもそうではない」よりも「必ずそうとは限らない」に近いです。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: Expensive things are necessarily good.

    正: Expensive things are not necessarily good.

    「高いものが必ずしも良いとは限らない」と言いたい場合は not necessarily を使います。necessarily だけだと「必然的に良い」という逆の意味になります。
