最も少ない、最小の 量・数・程度が、比べているものの中でいちばん少ないことを表します。little の最上級です。
最も少ない量、最小のもの 具体的な名詞を言わずに、「いちばん少ない量」や「最低限のこと」を指します。多くの場合 the least の形で使います。
最も〜でない、いちばん〜しない 形容詞や副詞の前に置いて、程度がいちばん低いことを表します。長めの形容詞でよく使われます。

使い方

  • least は little の最上級

    little は「少ない」、less は「より少ない」、least は「最も少ない」です。3つ以上、または全体の中でいちばん少ないものを言うときに least を使います。

  • the least と at least の違い

    the least は「最も少ない量・最小のもの」、at least は「少なくとも」です。at が付くと最低ラインを示す表現になります。

  • least + 長めの形容詞

    least important, least expensive, least likely のように、形容詞の前に置いて「最も〜でない」という意味を作れます。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: I have least money than you.

    正: I have less money than you.

    2つを比べて「より少ない」と言うときは less を使います。least は「最も少ない」です。

  • 誤: Please wait least five minutes.

    正: Please wait at least five minutes.

    「少なくとも」は at least です。least だけではこの意味になりません。

  • 誤: This is least expensive option.

    正: This is the least expensive option.

    「いちばん〜」という最上級では、普通 the を付けて the least expensive option と言います。
