使い方

• landlord と landowner の違い

  landlord は普通、家や部屋を貸して家賃を受け取る人です。landowner は単に土地を所有している人で、必ずしも誰かに貸しているとは限りません。

• 性別に関係なく使える

  landlady は女性の大家を表す語ですが、現代英語では女性にも landlord を使うことがよくあります。

• 借りる側は tenant

  landlord は貸す側、tenant は借りる側です。賃貸契約や住まいの話でセットでよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I rent a room from my landowner.

  正: I rent a room from my landlord.

  部屋や家を借りている相手は普通 landlord と言います。landowner は土地の所有者という意味が中心です。

• 誤: My landlord rented me an apartment.

  正: My landlord rented an apartment to me.

  rent は「貸す」「借りる」の両方に使えますが、貸す相手を言うときは rent something to someone が自然です。
