使い方

• glance at の形が基本

  「〜をちらっと見る」は多くの場合 glance at を使います。look at より短く、stare at よりずっと短い見方です。

• glance と stare の違い

  glance は「短く見る」、stare は「じっと見る」です。短さを強調したいときは glance、長く見つめるときは stare を使います。

• glance over は「ざっと見る」

  glance over a document は、細部まで読むのではなく、全体をすばやく確認する感じです。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She glanced the clock.

  正: She glanced at the clock.

  glance は「見る」の意味では、ふつう目的語の前に at が必要です。

• 誤: I watched a glance at the photo.

  正: I took a glance at the photo.

  名詞 glance は take a glance at / have a glance at の形で使います。watch a glance とは言いません。

• 誤: He glanced at me for a long time.

  正: He stared at me for a long time.

  glance は短く見ることなので、「長い間じっと見る」には stare を使うのが自然です。
