使い方

• door と doorway の違い

  door は開け閉めする「扉」そのものを指すことが多く、doorway は扉がある「出入り口の空間」を指します。例えば stand in the doorway は「出入り口に立つ」という意味です。

• at the door と on the door

  at the door は「ドアのところに・玄関に」、on the door は「ドアの表面に」という意味です。Someone is at the door. は「誰かが玄関にいる」、a sign on the door は「ドアに貼ってある表示」です。

• 比喩表現としての door

  open the door to ... は「〜への道を開く」、close the door on ... は「〜の可能性を閉ざす」という意味で、仕事・教育・機会についてよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Someone is on the door.

  正: Someone is at the door.

  人が玄関やドアのところにいる場合は at the door を使います。on the door は「ドアの表面に付いている」という意味になりやすいです。

  正: Please open the door.

  特定のドアを指すときは、普通 the door のように冠詞を付けます。
