despite
〜にもかかわらず 問題や不利な状況があるのに、それによって結果が変わらないことを表します。後ろには名詞、代名詞、動名詞（-ing）、または「the fact that + 文」が来ます。
〜をよそに、〜に負けず 反対・困難・予想外の条件がある中でも、何かが起こる、または続くことを強調します。
思わず、意に反して 「despite oneself」の形で、自分ではそうするつもりがないのに、感情や行動が出てしまうことを表します。

使い方

despite の後ろは名詞・動名詞が基本
despite は前置詞なので、直後に普通の文をそのまま置きません。例えば「Despite it was raining」は不自然です。「Despite the rain」または「Although it was raining」と言います。

despite と in spite of
despite と in spite of はほぼ同じ意味です。despite のほうが少し簡潔で、書き言葉でもよく使われます。in spite of は3語で、会話でも自然です。

despite the fact that
despite の後ろに文を続けたい場合は「despite the fact that + 文」を使えます。ただし少し長く、やや硬い表現です。
よくある間違い

正: Despite the rain, we went out.
despite の後ろに of は不要です。「in spite of」と混同しやすいので注意しましょう。

正: Although it was late, we kept working.
despite は前置詞なので、直後に「it was late」のような文を置けません。文を続けたい場合は although を使うか、「Despite the late hour」と言います。

despite の後ろに主語＋動詞を直接置かず、動名詞 being tired などにします。

despite は中英語で「軽蔑・悪意」という名詞として入り、のちに「in despite of（〜をものともせず）」のような表現から、現在の前置詞「〜にもかかわらず」の意味で使われるようになりました。
