に頼る、に依存する人や物を必要として、それがなければうまくいかないという意味です。depend on の後には名詞・代名詞・動名詞が来ます。

次第である、によって決まる結果や予定が、天気・状況・条件などによって変わることを表します。

場合による It depends. は、答えが状況によって変わるときに会話でよく使う短い表現です。

使い方

on を忘れない

depend はこの意味ではふつう depend on の形で使います。日本語の『頼る』だけを見て depend to や depend of にしないようにします。
It depends. だけでも使える

会話では It depends. だけで『場合によります』という意味になります。何に左右されるかを言うときは It depends on ... と続けます。

よくある間違い
