特派員、通信員 新聞社・テレビ局などのために、ある地域や分野からニュースを伝える記者。特に外国や遠い地域にいる記者を指すことが多いです。
文通相手、通信する人 手紙やメールをやり取りする相手、または定期的に文章で連絡を取る人。やや改まった語です。
対応する、一致する 別のものと関係が合っている、対応しているという意味。現代英語ではやや古い・堅い使い方で、普通は corresponding のほうがよく使われます。

reporter との違い
reporter は一般的な「記者」です。correspondent は、特定の地域・国・分野を担当して報道する記者を指すことが多く、foreign correspondent（外国特派員）、war correspondent（戦争特派員）のように使います。

文通相手の意味はやや堅い
手紙やメールをやり取りする人という意味もありますが、日常会話では pen pal や someone I write to のほうが自然な場合があります。correspondent は少し改まった表現です。

形容詞では corresponding が一般的
「対応する」という意味の形容詞として correspondent もありますが、現代英語では corresponding がより普通です。
