使い方

• 発音は core とほぼ同じ

  corps の p と s は発音しません。イギリス英語では /kɔː/、アメリカ英語では /kɔːr/ で、core とほぼ同じ音です。

• 単数形も複数形も corps

  corps は単数でも複数でも同じつづりです。one corps、two corps のように使えます。複数形を corpses にすると別語 corpse（死体）の複数形になってしまいます。

• a corps of ... の形

  軍事以外でも a corps of volunteers（ボランティア隊）、a corps of teachers（教師陣）のように、同じ目的を持つ人々のまとまった集団を表せます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He joined the Marine corpses.

  正: He joined the Marine Corps.

  corpses は corpse（死体）の複数形です。軍隊の組織を表す場合は Corps を使います。組織名では大文字にすることが多いです。

• 誤: She pronounced corps with the p and s sounds.

  正: Corps is pronounced like “core.”
