  建物と建物の間や、建物の裏側にある細くて狭い道を表します。大通りではなく、人や車が少し通れるような小道です。

使い方

• alley と street の違い

  street は一般的な「通り」を表し、車や人がよく通る道にも使えます。alley は建物の間や裏にある「狭い路地」を指すことが多く、street より小さく目立たない道です。

• bowling alley は「ボウリング場」

  bowling alley は決まった表現で、「ボウリングのレーン」だけでなく、ボウリングをする施設全体を指すことがよくあります。

• 前置詞は in が自然

  路地の中にいる・何かがあると言うときは in an alley が自然です。道を進む動きは walk down an alley や go through an alley と言えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I walked in the alley street.

  正: I walked down the alley.

  alley 自体が「細い道・路地」を意味するので、alley street とは普通言いません。

• 誤: The store is at a small alley.

  正: The store is in a small alley.

  路地の中に店がある場合は at より in が自然です。

• 誤: My alley helped me with the project.

  正: My ally helped me with the project.
