形容詞

adjacent

隣接した、すぐ隣の 建物・部屋・場所などが、ほとんど間をあけずに隣り合っていることを表します。多くの場合、後ろに to を置いて adjacent to ... の形で使います。
近接した、隣り合う関係の 物理的な場所だけでなく、リスト・図・座席・画面上の位置などで、すぐ隣にあることを表します。
隣接する、共通の辺や点をもつ 数学や図形の説明で、角・辺・面などが互いに接していることを表します。

使い方

  • 基本形は adjacent to

    「〜に隣接している」は adjacent to ... と言います。next to より少し硬く、地図・建物・ビジネス文書・説明文でよく使われます。

  • near との違い

    near は「近い」という広い意味ですが、adjacent は「すぐ隣にある」「接している」に近い意味です。距離が少し離れている場合は adjacent より near のほうが自然です。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: The hotel is adjacent the beach.

    正: The hotel is adjacent to the beach.

    adjacent の後ろに名詞を続けるときは、ふつう to が必要です。

  • 誤: My house is adjacent from the school.

    正: My house is adjacent to the school.

    「〜に隣接して」は from ではなく to を使います。

  • 誤: The two towns are adjacent, but they are 50 kilometers apart.

    正: The two towns are near each other, but they are 50 kilometers apart.

    adjacent は普通、すぐ隣り合っている場合に使います。50キロ離れているなら near each other などが自然です。

Latin

adjacēre : 近くに横たわる、隣にある

Latin の ad-（〜へ、〜の方へ）と jacēre（横たわる）に由来し、「そばに横たわっている」から「隣接している」という意味になりました。
