  形容詞

  人が学校・仕事・会議など、いるべき場所にいないことを表します。よく be absent from ... の形で使います。

使い方

• be absent from の形が基本

  「学校を欠席する」は be absent from school、「会議を欠席する」は be absent from the meeting のように、前置詞 from を使います。

• 形容詞と動詞で発音が違う

  形容詞の absent は最初を強く読み /ˈæb.sənt/、動詞の absent は後ろを強く読み /æbˈsent/ になります。

• not here より少し公式な表現

  absent は出席・勤務・公式な場面でよく使われます。日常的に「ここにいない」と言うだけなら not here も自然です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He was absent in school yesterday.

  正: He was absent from school yesterday.

  「学校を欠席している」は absent from school が自然です。場所を表す in ではなく from を使います。

• 誤: She absent from the meeting.

  正: She was absent from the meeting.

  形容詞 absent を使うときは be 動詞が必要です。

• 誤: I absented school yesterday.

  正: I was absent from school yesterday.

  日常的には動詞 absent より、形容詞 be absent from を使うのが自然です。動詞 absent は主に absent oneself from の形で、かなり形式ばっています。
