  接続詞

  2つ以上の可能性があるときに、どちらなのかを表す接続詞。know, ask, decide, wonder, check などの後でよく使います。

  I don't know whether she will come today.

  接続詞

  whether ... or ... の形で、どちらの場合でも結果が同じであることを表します。

使い方

• whether と if の違い

  「〜かどうか」の意味では if も使えますが、whether のほうが少し明確で、書き言葉や丁寧な文でよく使われます。特に whether or not、whether ... or ...、前置詞の後では whether を使うのが自然です。

• whether to do の形

  whether の後に to不定詞を置いて、「〜するかどうか」という意味を作れます。例: decide whether to stay「残るかどうか決める」。

• 直接疑問文にはしない

  whether はふつう間接疑問で使います。直接質問するときは “Will he come?” のように普通の疑問文を使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Whether will he come?

  正: Will he come?

  直接質問では whether を文頭に置いて疑問文を作りません。whether は主に「彼が来るかどうか」のような間接疑問で使います。

• 誤: I am worried whether I can pass the exam.

  正: I am worried about whether I can pass the exam.

  worried の後に名詞的な内容を続ける場合は、about whether が自然です。

• 誤: We discussed if we should change the plan.

  正: We discussed whether we should change the plan.

  discuss の後で「〜かどうかを話し合う」と言う場合は、if より whether が自然です。
