  名詞

使い方

• 少しフォーマルな表現

  utmost は日常会話よりも、ビジネス・案内・書き言葉でよく使われます。カジュアルには greatest、maximum、best などで言い換えられる場合があります。

• 形容詞は名詞の前で使うことが多い

  utmost care、utmost importance、utmost respect のように名詞の前に置くのが自然です。「The care is utmost.」のような使い方は普通しません。

• do one's utmost の形を覚える

  do my utmost、do her utmost、do our utmost のように所有格を入れて「全力を尽くす」という意味になります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We did the utmost effort.

  正: We made the utmost effort.

  effort には通常 make を使います。「努力する」は make an effort / make the utmost effort が自然です。

• 誤: The project is utmost important.

  正: The project is of the utmost importance.

  utmost は普通、important のような形容詞を直接修飾しません。「非常に重要だ」は of the utmost importance と言うと自然です。

• 誤: I tried utmost.

  正: I did my utmost.

  「全力を尽くした」は do one's utmost の形で表します。try utmost とは言いません。
