使い方

• 期間にも場所にも使える

  throughout は「時間の全体」には「〜の間ずっと」、「場所や物の全体」には「〜の至る所に」という意味で使います。

• during との違い

  during は「〜の間に」という広い意味で、出来事がその期間内に起きたことを表します。throughout は期間全体にわたって続いたことを強調します。

• 文末では副詞

  The movie was exciting throughout. のように名詞を続けず文末で使う場合は副詞で、「全体を通して」という意味になります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: It rained during the night throughout.

  正: It rained throughout the night.

  throughout は前置詞として名詞句の前に置きます。「夜の間ずっと」は throughout the night と言います。

• 誤: I stayed home throughout two hours.

  正: I stayed home for two hours.

  単に時間の長さを言うときは for two hours が自然です。throughout は「その期間全体にわたって」という強調があるときに使います。
