使い方

• the third と a third の違い

  the third は「3番目のもの・人」を指すことが多く、a third は「3分の1」という割合を表すことが多いです。例: the third page は「3ページ目」、a third of the page は「ページの3分の1」です。

• 序数には the がよく付く

  順番を表すときは the third floor, the third day のように the を付けることが多いです。ただし my third visit, her third child のように所有格がある場合は the は付けません。

• 日付での読み方

  May 3 は会話では May third または the third of May と読めます。書くときは May 3, May 3rd, 3 May など地域や文体で形が変わります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She lives on three floor.

  正: She lives on the third floor.

  階や順番を言うときは基数 three ではなく序数 third を使います。また、特定の階なので the を付けるのが自然です。

• 誤: This is the my third time here.

  正: This is my third time here.

  my, your, his などの所有格と the は普通いっしょに使いません。

• 誤: One third of the students was absent.

  正: One third of the students were absent.

  students のような複数の人について言う場合、割合の後の名詞に合わせて were が自然です。
