使い方

• theme と topic の違い

  topic は「話題」に近く、会話や文章で扱う具体的な対象を指します。theme はその話題の中心にある大きな考えやメッセージを指すことが多いです。たとえば、topic が “school life” なら、theme は “growing up” や “friendship” になることがあります。

• イベントやデザインにも使える

  theme は文学や作文だけでなく、party theme、website theme、restaurant theme のように、全体の雰囲気やデザインを決めるアイデアにも使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The theme of the meeting is about budget.

  正: The theme of the meeting is the budget.

  theme の後に名詞を置く場合、is about よりも is the budget のように言うほうが自然です。about を使うなら The meeting is about the budget. が自然です。

• 誤: I like the theme song of this restaurant.

  正: I like the theme of this restaurant.

  店の雰囲気やデザインについて言う場合は theme を使います。theme song はテレビ番組や映画などの「テーマ曲」を指します。
