もう一方の、もう片方の 2つあるもののうち、すでに話題になっていない方を指すときに使います。the が付くので、どちらのことか相手にも分かっている場合に使います。
もう一方、残りの一つ 名詞を繰り返さずに、2つのうち残っている方を指す代名詞として使えます。

使い方

  • 2つのうち残りの一方

    the other は、基本的に2つあるもののうち『もう一方』を指します。数が決まっていない別のものなら another を使うことが多いです。

  • the other one が便利

    同じ名詞を繰り返したくないときは the other one と言えます。例: This cup is clean, but the other one is dirty.

  • the others は複数の残り

    残りが複数ある場合は the others を使います。the other は単数の残りを指すことが多いです。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: I have two bags. One is black, and another is blue.

    正: I have two bags. One is black, and the other is blue.

    2つのうち残りの一方を指すので the other を使います。

  • 誤: The post office is on other side of the street.

    正: The post office is on the other side of the street.

    決まった反対側を指すので the other side と言います。

  • 誤: One student stayed, and the other left the room.

    正: One student stayed, and the others left the room.

    残りが複数人なら the others を使います。残りが1人だけなら the other で正しいです。
