使い方

• legal との違い

  legal は広く「法律に関する、合法の」という意味です。statutory は特に「制定法・法令で定められた」という意味です。

• 公式文書で多い

  statutory duty、statutory right、statutory requirement のように、法律・行政・労務の文書でよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: This parking is statutory.

  正: This parking is legal.

  単に合法だと言う場合は legal が自然です。statutory は法令で定められた権利・義務などに使います。

• 誤: The statutory said employees need breaks.

  正: The statute said employees need breaks.

  statutory は形容詞です。法律そのものを指す名詞は statute です。
