副詞

shortly

まもなく、すぐに 今からあまり時間がたたないうちに起こることを表します。予定や案内でよく使われます。
少し前に、少し後に shortly before や shortly after の形で、ある出来事のすぐ前・すぐ後を表します。
手短に、簡潔に 長く話さず、短く要点だけを述べることを表します。ただし日常会話では briefly のほうがよく使われます。

使い方

  • shortly = soon の少し丁寧な言い方

    The bus will arrive shortly. は The bus will arrive soon. とほぼ同じ意味ですが、shortly は案内放送、メール、仕事の場面で少し丁寧に聞こえます。

  • shortly after / shortly before をセットで覚える

    shortly after は「〜のすぐ後に」、shortly before は「〜のすぐ前に」という意味です。時間の前後関係を説明するときによく使います。

  • 「手短に」は briefly のほうが自然なことが多い

    shortly も「手短に」という意味がありますが、現代英語では briefly のほうが一般的です。Please explain it briefly. のほうが Please explain it shortly. より自然です。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: The train will arrive soonly.

    正: The train will arrive shortly.

    soonly という単語は標準英語では使いません。「まもなく」は soon または shortly を使います。

  • 誤: She left short after lunch.

    正: She left shortly after lunch.

    「〜のすぐ後に」は shortly after の形にします。short は形容詞なので、この位置では自然ではありません。

  • 誤: I will explain shortly it.

    正: I will explain it briefly.

    目的語 it は explain の直後に置きます。また「手短に説明する」は briefly のほうが自然です。
