使い方

• 基本的には不可算名詞

  punctuation は普通「句読点全体」や「句読点の使い方」を表す不可算名詞です。1つ1つの記号を言うときは punctuation mark と言います。

• 日本語の「句読点」より少し広い

  英語の punctuation には comma, period, colon, semicolon, quotation marks, parentheses など、多くの書き言葉の記号が含まれます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: There are many punctuations in this sentence.

  正: There are many punctuation marks in this sentence.

  punctuation は通常、不可算名詞です。個々の記号を数えるときは punctuation marks を使います。

• 誤: You need a punctuation at the end of the sentence.

  正: You need a punctuation mark at the end of the sentence.

  1つの記号を指す場合は a punctuation ではなく a punctuation mark が自然です。

• 誤: Your punctuation are wrong.

  正: Your punctuation is wrong.

  punctuation は不可算名詞なので、動詞は is を使います。
