序文、前書き 本やレポートの最初に置かれ、目的・背景・感謝などを説明する短い文章。
前置きする、前もって述べる 本題に入る前に、必要な説明や注意を先に言うこと。やや硬い表現で、会議・発表・文章でよく使われます。

覚え方

preface と foreword の違い
preface はふつう本の著者自身が書く前書きです。foreword は著者以外の有名人・専門家などが書く紹介文であることが多いです。

動詞の preface は日常会話より、発表・会議・論文・講演などで使われやすい表現です。カジュアルには start by saying や begin with がよく使われます。

Latin の prae（前に）と fari（話す）に関係し、「本題の前に話すこと」という意味から、現在の「序文」「前置きする」という意味になりました。
